SOUTHAMPTON, U.K. – A student in Southampton last week won more than £27,000 during his first visit to a bingo hall in the city.
The 21-year-old, in the third year of a science degree at the University of Southampton, struck it lucky during a night out with friends.
He paid just two pounds to enter Mecca Bingo’s national draw and somehow beat 100,000 other players across the country to land a full house first.
The total jackpot that the student won was £27,865.
Business at the bingo hall since the win has been excellent. Chris Walker, general manager of Mecca Bingo in Southampton, said students had been flooding to the hall to try their luck since the mammoth win.
“There was a massive cheer when the guy realised he had won.It was a fantastic atmosphere, full of excitement – even the bingo caller couldn’t stop shaking because she’d never awarded that amount to anyone. He was so happy he actually downed a whole pint of beer that was sitting in front of him!” he said
“He said he was going to use the money to fund another course when he’d finished university and put a depositdown on a mortgage. Since the win we’ve had quite a few enquiries from other students hoping they’ll be as lucky. Everyone’s really chuffed it happened here. We all feel very lucky to have seen someone win that amount of money.’’ added Mr. Walker
